Fields of Magic
The
Art of Ione Elizabeth (Betty)McIntyre

Magic was
in the air and on
the ground at Bowen
Island’s Collins
Farm
on Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17.
Scores of visitors and fans of Betty
McIntyre's work came to historic Collins Farm to enjoy an outdoor
exhibition of paintings by
the late and
prolific Bowen
Island
artist Betty McIntyre. This biannual exhibit represents
a
highlight in the summer cultural life on Bowen.
McIntyre started Fields
of Magic in the early 1990s as a unique and enjoyable way to
view her
works in the beautiful natural surroundings
of Collins Farm. This heritage
location, her actual birthplace, was built by McIntyre’s pioneering
parents in 1922 and
continued to be her
home for thirty years after
her
retirement as an art
teacher.
Since
McIntyre’s death in
1999, her sisters, Jean Jamieson and Marion Moore, along with the Bowen
Island
Arts Council and many
community volunteers, have continued to
mount a biannual
exhibit of her work. The paintings are displayed on specially built
wooden
frames positioned around the fields and
orchards surrounding the farm house.
McIntyre studied at the
original Vancouver School of Art in the 1940’s with B.C. Binning and
then daringly
hitchhiked to New York to live
in Greenwich
Village where she studied at the famed Art
Student’s League for four years.
Rendered in the style of
Magic Realism, McIntyre’s subjects are both realistic and from the
realms of
fantasy. Her work also shows her
interest in female narrative and the
portrayal
of the family, which continued to be recurring themes during her entire
career.
