Dialogue
Stuart A. Slind and Dolores Capdevila
July 7th to July 25th 2010

When two artists influence each other they exchange more than ideas they exchange enthusiasm confidence and vision. Dolores and I started our dialogue by exchanging technical matters. Conversations about different techniques and the properties of various mediums and materials that went into our paintings. From there we started to realize that we shared a similar vision, a similar world view, that we had both, in our separate ways,, been trying to explore in our paintings. and like many people in similar situations. we were able to see clearer in the others work the very ideas that were eluding us in our own. As well as been informative this kind of shared experience brought with it a kindling of enthusiasm in both of us and with this came a growing confidence in our mutual visions

Reception: Sunday 11th, 2-4pm

Alterscapes
Real and ideal landscapes by Lazuline: three Shuswap artists
21 May - 6 June
Artist Reception: Sunday 23 June, 2-4pm

The work of Lazuline is emotional, but not angst-ridden; political, but not aggressive. Our expression of the beauty and joy in our immediate surroundings, here in the Shuswap, will not engender protest in the streets. It will however speak to the very heart of the ordinary Canadian. We revel in and celebrate the Shuswap landscape, be it real, ideal or remembered, as it is an integral part of what "home" means to us. Our sense of place is a defining factor in who we are.

Lazuline is a group of three artists: Linda Franklin, Tracey Kutschker and Lisa Figueroa who live and paint in the Shuswap. Linda's family has been in the Shuswap for many generations, and Tracey and Lisa have called the Shuswap home for over 20 years. These artists are at varying stages of life: Tracey raising two young daughters, Lisa with two teenage sons and Linda with three grown children and five grandchildren.

Though our lives lead us in many directions we are united in our desire: to paint and to raise awareness through community and cultural events of the worthiness of visual art.

MAMA – The Installation

MAMA celebrates our common experience as well as the significance of our occupation in the development of humanity, and, by provoking thought and conversation about this, MAMA empowers us to feel pride in our work. In knowing our own significance, we are better role-models for our children, and also better able to provide strong roots for each new generation.

SuperMAMA – The Performance

SuperMAMA is a non-profit event, with the purpose of empowering mothers of all ages and experiences, through conversation and unity. The premise is that, in accepting the importance of our roles as mothers, we strengthen the roots of the next generation. SuperMAMA is best described as a visual concert. It's set around a screen of white bed sheets hanging from a clothesline, lit from behind and in front. Emily van Lidth de Jeude performs a set of songs and poems about motherhood (extremely diverse in mood and content), and a group of mothers and grandmothers accompanies with dance, painting (with water on the sheet), voice and instrumentation. Much of their input appears as shadows on the sheets. There's also some encouragement for the audience to join in some of the songs, especially at the end, when the whole thing wraps up with the group singing together, in a round about the significance of our roles, as mothers.

SuperMAMA is a performance of song, dance, poetry, and painting. It was written by Emily van Lidth de Jeude and performed by Emily van Lidth de Jeude, Lyn van Lidth de Jeude, Keona Hammond, Lidia Patriasz, Carol Fancy, Genevieve McCorquodale, Kami Kanetsuka and Allice Bernards. SuperMAMA is sponsored by Hazel & Co. of Vancouver, and BC Playthings of North Vancouver.
