Arts & Culture Weekly Update
A publication of the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC)              April 9, 2010
Congratulations to Ily, Allen, the winner of the the Arts & Culture Survey draw!

The Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC) thanks residents (more than 10% of our adult population) who took the time to fill out the Bowen Arts & Culture Survey. Ily Allen (pictured above) won the new Nano i-Pod prize, which was awarded last week. The results of the survey are now being reviewed and analyzed. A report will be presented to the Board of Directors of BIAC at the monthly meeting. A summary will also be released to the public later this Spring. The information will assist BIAC in development of its strategic plan.

Now accepting EARLY-BIRD Registration!

July 2-4, 2010

Early-bird registration is now being accepted for the literary event of the season. From July 2 to 4, on beautiful Bowen Island, writers, authors and other word wizards will gather to share knowledge, insights, and inspiration about honing the art and craft of the written word.

Develop your writing prowess, consider new markets or new media in which to promote your work, get honest and constructive feedback about your writing and input and advice on how and where to publish and mix and mingle with other writers here on Bowen Island. The Write on Bowen Festival, presented by the Bowen Island Arts Council and now in its third year, is pleased to present top calibre facilitators and presenters, and an expanded program including opportunities to meet with local editors, agents, and publishers.

A festival pass is currently available for only $150. It’s great value, but it’s only available to those who register by 15 May. One-day passes are also available for just $100.

For detailed information about the Festival, visit the website. To register, click here.

The Phoenix Over-readers Anonymous Book Club
is holding a mass book club meeting at
Evergreen Hall on
Monday, April 19th at
7:30 p.m.
Everyone Welcome!

The literature part of the evening will be a great presentation as those of you who have heard Susanna Braund speak will know. Our chosen book is World’s Wife by Carol Ann Duffy who is currently Poet Laureate of England. Don’t be put off those of you who are not too fond of poetry as Susanna will very quickly show you how wonderful and fun it can be. This collection of poems takes characters, stories, histories and myths which focus on men, and in Duffy's renowned feminist way, presents them anew for the public to look at the women that were previously obscured behind the men.  If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be Mrs Aesop, Mrs Midas, the Devil’s wife or Mrs Icarus, to name a few, this is a great book for you.

The other part of our gathering will be potluck nibbles and snacks, drinks and a chance to chat to friends and strangers about books you love and books you hate. On Bowen we have the one of the highest per capita book club memberships and this is a great chance to meet as one group.

There is no cost to you for this evening and no obligation to buy the book. Phoenix will be ordering some copies on Tuesday from the publisher as it is not readily available so if you do feel that you would like a copy please
email Angela Powell ASAP.  It would also help with planning if you would let her know whether or not you would like to be part of this fun and hopefully first annual Bowen book Clubs evening.

The Gallery @ Artisan is open Friday - Sunday from Noon - 4 p.m., and by appointment.

The Gallery is available for rental. To inquire, please call Elizabeth Fitzgerald at 604-947-2454 and leave a message, or email gallery@biac.ca.
