Swimming Through Air

Kim Kasasian

August 19th - September 6th, 2009

Kim's paintings are an exploration of a human experience of the natural world. Each piece starts as an emotional response to a scene or element. Rather than describing whatever initiated the piece, she tries to produce an evocation of her own response to it. She hopes to produce in the viewer the same kind of response as that which we have to a dream that we can't quite recall, but is affecting us emotionally nonetheless.

Kim Kasasian has exhibited in Canada, Britain, Cyprus and Malta.

Blending stringband tradition and contemporary composition The Rakish Angles weave an intricate tapestry of mostly original, mostly instrumental "Oldtime-Latin-Gypsy-Grass."  While the individual members of the quartet bring a wide range of musical backgrounds and experience to the band, the Angles are collectively influenced by the music of The David Grisman Quintet, The Creaking Tree String Quartet, Bela Fleck, and Django Reinhardt.  The band is made up of violinist Serena Eades, mandolinist Simon Hocking, bassist Boyd Norman and guitarist Dan Richter.

  Bowen Island Conservance presents

Sue Daly is an award-winning wildlife film-maker and photographer based on the tiny British Channel Island of Sark. She specialises in underwater work and, while work as a freelance camera woman has taken her around the world, her greatest passion is for British marine life. As well as working for the BBC's Natural History Unit and other production companies, Sue has filmed, presented and produced two series of wildlife films about the Channel Islands.

Wednesday August 26, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. At Collins Hall. This presentation, supported by BICS, will explore the Island of Sark: wildlife above and beneath the waves and will include her film 'Wild Sark'.

Saturday September 5, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. At Bowen Island Community School. Living on Bowen Island we look at the sea daily, but few of us know what is beneath the waves. This presentation provides a unique experience to explore the area beneath the waves surrounding Bowen Island with a qualified professional. Most of the presentation will be based on Sue’s diving expeditions two weeks prior to the presentation.

Lost and Found

At Ursul Tribe's memorial service last October, Anton van Walraven loaned an easel to display Ursul's work in The Gallery.

Unfortunately it was never returned afterwards to Anton, and it has been lost ever since. Anton would very much like it back, he inherited the easel from his family.

Here follows the description:

Mabef M/09 - basic with tray. Height 56" - 96", base 22" x 22"
Beach wood, red tint. Copper details

If found please contact 947-0307

If you are staging an arts and cultural event and wish to be in our listing, please let us know. We'd be happy to include it in the weekly update, which is sent out to members of the Bowen Island Arts Council. Send details to Jacqueline.
