Bowen Torch Relay celebration rocks!
Accolades continue to pour in, following recent community celebrations held in conjunction with the 2010 Winter Olympics, and coordinated by the local Spirit of BC committee. “Just wished to both thank you and congratulate you for that amazing morning yesterday,” wrote one local resident.
But Murray Atherton said it best: You are amazing Bowen Island.” Murray, chair of the Spirit Committee, consisting of members from the BI Chamber of Commerce, the BI Municipality, BI Community School and the BI Arts Council, was referring to the impressive turnout at the Torch Relay Community Celebration this past Wednesday morning. Approximately 1,200 people crawled out of bed in the early hours, congregating in droves along Government Road and the Government dock to greet and cheer along the Olympic torchbearers. The Black Sheep danced, the Bowen Island Juggling Club tossed fire in the air, and men women and children showed their spirit with great verve and clatter. Rosie Ander, an island teen, was the first torch bearer, carrying the Olympic flame down the dark main street of the island. Mike Jusiak and Valerie Hahn completed the team for the local leg of the relay. Spectators waved Canadian flags and red mittens, donned mini torches provided by the Spirit Committee, and sang in unison. Mayor Bob Turner welcomed the Olympic symbol to the shores of Bowen, and thanked the Spirit Committee and volunteers for setting the scene for a community gathering that will be long remembered. Local eateries – the Snug, the Happy Isle, Village Baker and the Ruddy Kitchen served up a bite to eat and warm drinks, a hilarious Paul Hooson and KC the Clown entertained the children, and a good time was had by all. As the torch headed off to catch the Queen of Capilano on the 6:30 a.m. ferry, the crowd broke into a moving rendition of O Canada. And as the ship sailed away with the flame aloft, Lorne Warr lead fellow islanders singing our new community anthem, Back to the Island Again.

The 3rd Annual Winterfest was also a crowd pleaser, down at the shoreline of Crippen Park on Tuesday evening. The Chill Billies were a hit, with their rousing tunes and high energy. Everyone savored the rich chocolate and fruit fondue and kept warm ‘round the inviting bonfire. Lorne Warr was also on hand to strum along and lead the vocals rehearsing Back to the Island Again in preparation for the next day’s performance. There’s still events to come, coinciding with the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and opportunities to view the telecast of the Games at local venues.
Don't forget to take in the No Snow Games on February 17.
The Bowen Island Chamber of Commerce, working with Matt Neufeld, the Youth Outreach Worker of the Bowen Island Municipality will be setting up an array of games and activities for the entire family. The free family fun runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be three games in Village Square and two games set up in the Bowen Pub's parking lot.
The public is also invited to watch artists at work. Shane Tweten and Simon Daniel James are collaborating on a sculpture to commemorate the 2010 Winter Olympics, and which will be installed on public land in Snug Cove. The artwork is currently under progress at a makeshift studio located at the old Gas Station and former Purple Door Gallery at the four corners. To view the work underway, drop by, call Shane Tweten at 604-831-8733 or contact the chamber office.
The mural art project, featuring the art of Josh Van Dyke is still underway, and a date for the unveiling will be announced soon.

Kunamokst -- Coastal Inspirations Mural Mosaic to feature four Bowen Artists
Four Bowen Artists will have their work depicted in the Kunamokst -- Coastal Inspirations Mural Mosaic, to be unveiled on February 13. Sarah Haxby, Greg Cope, Janet Esseiva and Simon Daniel James will be among more than 200 artists participating in the project, underway for the past year and a half. They join some of Canada's finest artists from along the west coast who have collaborated to create a stunning 12 foot x 21 foot mural. The mural is comprised of 231, 12 inch x 12 inch original paintings. When all the images are combined together, a cohesive, united image springs to life. There are no digital effects and the artists did not know each other or know what the united final image would be. The theme of the mural is UNITY through DIVERSITY - a great symbol of the Olympic ideals through art.
Kunamokst- Coastal Inspirations Mural Mosaic combines artists as young as 16 years old to artists as old as 91. It includes the work of world renowned artists including Roy Henry Vickers, April White and Robert Bateman.
