Adult Improve Theatre Group to convene

First gathering at Collins Hall this Sunday at 4 p.m.
Come out if you have a hankering to play.
facilitated by B.I.T.C.H. Bowen Island Theatre Collins Hall. The improv group will be gently lead by Chris Corrigan and me. We'll play the first day and then take it from there.

The current idea within the theatre community is to start using Collins Hall as our little theatre until we build the hall. (remember the old coffee house days there?)
Martin Clarke will be directing a staged reading of Under Milk Wood, by Dylan Thomas and some other producer, director types have some ideas cooking. Everyone welcome!


 Spirit of Bowen to Shine




This is the week to really show off Bowen's spirit@ Don't miss Winterfest on Tuesday evening, February 9, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Crippen Park. Watch for the warm and bright bonfire down by the shore. Enjoy a chocolate and fruit fondue, music by the Chill Billies and a community sing featuring the Bowen Song -- Back to the Island Again, lead by singer/songwriter Lorne Warr. Then set your clocks early and get ready for the Torch Relay Community Celebration on Wednesday, beginning at 6 a.m. Join the Official Olympic Torch Relay! It begins on Bowen at 6:10 a.m., across from BICS near the vehicle merge sign along the ferry loading lane. Participate in rousing activities down Government Road and at the north dock. Partake of a community breakfast hosted by local eateries. Watch for the entertaining clowns, the beloved Black Sheep, the talented Bowen Island Jugglers, and other special events. Get your picture taken with the torch and join friends and neighbours in a heartwarming rendition of our island's theme song.

Introduction to Watercolour with Bill Hoopes
Learn the basic materials and techniques involved in the creation of watercolour paintings. Explore, through a series of exercises, the nature of the medium and the exciting effects that can be accomplished using transparent watercolour.

Mondays Mar 1–Apr 5
10 a.m. to 12 noon

6 sessions; Cost $135. plus tax

Concept, Composition and Colour: Intermediate painting with Marilyn Lemon Fine tune your painting skills in acrylic or old dealing with big issues -- What is my intention? What is good painting? and smaller issues -- colour, composition, idea development, implication of depth and volume.

Thursdays Mar 18-Apr 15
10 a.m.-1 p.m.

5 sessions; Cost $150 plus tax


 

Musical Theatre Program for Teens

This is a performance-based program offering teens the opportunity to learn how to perform musical theatre. We'll be learning how to choose an appropriate song, interpret a lyric, incorporate vocal line and bring the performance to the stage. We'll also be doing a group trip to see a live musical theatre performance! Participants will receive some vocal training and extensive one-on-one performance coaching. The program will culminate with a cabaret performance in the first week of June.

The course is being taught by Gil Yaron. Gil was a professional musical theatre performer, performing in the second national tour of Les Miserables and the Canadian premiere of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. Participants will be supported by live accompaniment by Sheilagh Sparks


Dates: March 7 - June 6th (11 classes and 1 performance date - no class on Easter Sunday or May long weekend)
Time: Sundays, 3 - 5pm
Location: Collins Hall and Cates Hill Chapel
Cost: $120 per person

The Cultural Olympiad, held in conjunction with the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics offers a cornucopia of arts and cultural events and experiences. It's billed as: "60 days of exceptional programming including world premieres, commissioned words and one-of-a-kind  events, from January 22 through March 21, 2010." Inspired by culture's role as the second pillar of the Olympic movement, the Cultural Olympiad is a celebration of contemporary imagination. It spans music, dance, theatre, visual arts, digital and new media arts, film, literature and spectacular outdoor events. Running in the lead up to  and throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, this extraordinary celebration will showcase more than 600 free and ticketed performances and exhibitions.
