   Call for Exhibition Proposals

The North Vancouver Community Arts Council is currently accepting submissions for our Summer/Fall 2010 exhibition schedule at CityScape Community Art Space.

CityScape Community Art Space is a project of the North Vancouver Community Arts Council whose mission it is to celebrate and promote art and artists through quality experiences in a unique and inviting gallery space and to create an inclusive environment, which enriches and encourages interaction in the community.

We accept proposals from all members of the community.  Artists are welcome to submit individually or as part of a group.  Non-artists are invited to submit ideas and concepts for exhibitions they would like to see in the gallery. All proposals are evaluated by a professional jury panel.  As a result of our community mandate scheduled exhibitions must have at least three participants.  Artists who submit an idea for an exhibition on their own will be grouped by the North Vancouver Arts Council with additional artists. We are seeking to schedule a total of 5 exhibitions during this timeframe.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Saturday, September 19th, 2009 at 4:30pm.

To obtain the Submission Guidelines please contact the North Vancouver Community Arts Council at 604.988.6844, or send an email to nvartscouncil6@telus.net.

Arts Community Extremely Concerned by cuts to the BC Arts Council

The arts and cultural sector in British Columbia is facing an imminent crisis. The Service Plans for the next two years show a 40% reduction in funding for the BC Arts Council. The BC Arts Council is the largest funding body in the province; last year, more than 224 communities throughout British Columbia depended on it for support.

The government has defended the cuts as a necessary and discretionary, but artists and their communities are unconvinced. “No other government in the country has reduced funding for arts and culture during the recession,” said Minna Schendlinger of the Push Festival. “In fact, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and the Government of Canada have all increased their investments.” In their estimation, arts and culture are clearly valued and recognized as an important area to invest by other governments - they are not seen as discretionary nor a frill; they are core investments.

During a recent interview with Scott Walker of ProArt Alliance in Victoria, the new Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, Kevin Krueger, characterized the arts community as unconcerned.
“I am not hearing complaints at all from the arts and cultural community,” he said. “I think people are pretty happy with what we’ve done.”

“The arts community is genuinely grateful for the past support that the Liberals in BC have given to arts and culture,” said Mr. Alibhai. “However, the proposed cuts take us back to much older funding levels.  The effect will be a costly creative drain in this province, and it will be next to impossible to regain the ground lost.”

Contemplative Juggler Thomas Arthur comes to Artisan Square

July 25th at 2pm at Artisan Square.

Thomas Arthur taught himself to juggle when he was 11 years old. His delight in the visual patterns and embodied musicality of objects in motion has inspired a perfomance career spanning two and a half decades. His intricately choreographed dance of visual rhythms and shifting shapes has engaged audiences at festivals, theaters, clubs, conferences and schools in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

Thomas describes himself as a Contemplative Juggler. Working with music, balls and items found in nature his juggling is fluid and facinating. Recently back from a tour of New Zealand, Thomas is visiting Bowen Island friends and will be offering a short outdoor performance and workshop as part of the Bowen Island Juggling Club.
