Weekly Arts & Culture Update

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our friend and colleague, Jan Wells. A beloved wife of Jerry, mother to William, Jan was an active member of our community, and a talented artist. She was a highly valued member of many local groups including a director of the Board of the Bowen Island Arts Council, a member of our gallery committee, a member of the Arts Pacific Co-op and a huge supporter of the arts on the island. Her warmth and kindness, vibrant spirit and inspiring energy, even as she courageously faced her illness, was a gift to all who knew her. We send our love to her family, and we will hold Jan in our hearts for a very long time to come. A memorial service will be held for Jan on Sunday, December 13 at 2 p.m. a the Little Red Church on Bowen Island.

The National Post writes:  “Adapted from a Haida legend Yahgulanaas heard growing up, Red tells the story of a young man obsessed with revenge against the raider who kidnapped his younger sister. More memorable then the story, however, is the art. Yahgulanaas blends these two distinct styles together into something wholly original.” Published by Douglas & McIntyre, the hardcover book features 120 pages, including 108 colour illustrations by the local artist and author.

"A complex and thought-provoking work, Atom Egoyan's Adoration works well as both mystery and engaging drama." Rotten Tomatoes

Mad Mabel Book Launch
Mad Mabel’s Christmas, a uber-popular play written by David Cameron of Kingbaby Productions is coming out in book form. Published by AIM Language Learning and gorgeously illustrated by Bowen’s own Adrien Deggan, it is the story of an “eccentric homeless woman who teaches a lesson in love and compassion to a misguided and selfish young girl.” A book launch is planned for Saturday, Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. at the Gallery in Artisan Square. Refreshments and a staged reading of the book by David Cameron, Jackie Minns, Katalina Bernards and a very special appearance by Jazzmin Carson who created the role of Anna, the young girl, 12 years ago in the very first production of the play. Bowen needs a song!

The local Spirit of BC Committee is seeking submissions of an official song of Bowen – reflecting its effervescent spirit and joie de vivre! Original lyrics and a catchy melody are sought. The song will inspire us all to raise our voices together, if not in harmony, at least in a shared moment of celebration of the place we call home.

It is hoped the song will be sung far and wide on Bowen shores by young and old alike, as a community anthem to be performed at public gatherings.

All Bowen Island residents are welcome to enter their compositions. Traditional tunes may be used IF copyright is in the public domain.

An honorarium of $750 will be awarded to the winning song. The composer will retain copyright but agree to allow the Bowen Island Municipality to distribute copies of the work for noncommercial purposes only.

Submissions must be received no later than December 4. Please forward digital recordings (MP3 preferred) along with written copies of lyrics no later than December 1, 2009 to bowensings@gmail.com, or drop off DVDs and other information at Municipal Hall at 1041 Mount Gardner Road. Recordings should not exceed three minutes in length. Please include full contact information with submissions including name, address, phone number(s) and email address.

A Message from Arts Club Theatre Company

As you may know, the arts and cultural community in BC is under siege. Organizations large and small are affected.

Here at the Arts Club Theatre Company we feel very strongly that a healthy community has at its core a diverse and engaged arts sector. Presently, that very core is severely threatened. As we have come to understand, the arts will potentially suffer a 90% cut over two years through massive reductions to the BC Arts Council and gaming funds, at a time when no other province has contemplated such a threatening action to the arts sector.

It is critical that we send a message to the provincial government that these cuts are massive, destructive, out of proportion, and unacceptable. It is important that the government hears from you: consumers of culture, donors, and concerned citizens. Please follow the link to easily send a clear message!

SPEAK OUT ABOUT BC ARTS CUTS | Alliance For Arts and Culture

Your message will be sent automatically to Premier Gordon Campbell; Kevin Krueger, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts; Rich Coleman, Minister of Housing and Social Development; Colin Hansen, Minister of Finance; and your MLA.

We must have a groundswell of opposition to these drastic cuts in arts and culture funding; please do your part to preserve BC's strong cultural and arts environment. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Bill Millerd
