Weekly Arts & Culture Update

Brushstrokes And Stitches

Art exhibit continues this week at the Gallery @ Artisan Square

The exhibit features the art of Susan Hillman, a local painter and textile artist, who taught at Emily Carr Institute of Art for many decades. Provocative and beautiful, the work, varying shapes, sizes and media, is emboldened by textures and layers. While some of the pieces convey clear messages and meanings, others are more subtle, yet no less full of impact and resonance. As Hillman writes: “Abstract painting is a language that cannot be translated into entertainment, data or easily discernible subject matter. Each individual brushstroke in a painting preserves an identity in real time midst a mass-culture exploding with speed, replication, technology, and immediate gratification. In contrast, I become focused and thrilled at the ontological aspect of making these brushed marks." The show runs until October 25.

TONIGHT! Thursday, October 8

It is, once again, the second Thursday of the month and that means it is Wide Open Mic night down at Gino's Happy Isle Cafe. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the mic is switched on shortly after that. Come and bring a song, a poem, a monologue. Seven minutes or so for an act. More if there are less people. Never less, even if there are more. Gino serves snacks, wine and beer, coffee and tea. Each night always has a touch of magic. We never know what we are going to see, hear or feel. That is the fun of it:-)

Scary People Wanted

Looking for hags, wenches, sea beasts, a galley cook to serve up something grotesque and oceanic. Also on the potential cast of characters, morbidly injured surfer wandering aimlessly. You too could enthrall the crowds on Halloween night. Contact: coraldawn70@gmail.com or call 604-947-2052.

Miscellaneous items for the night of that we need: ropes, anchor, barrels, any nautical gear for loan would be highly appreciated real and fake swords. All items to be returned in good condition.

Site seeks writers

Check out a great new site for writers – the Lieben Artists’ Colony, aptly named after the heritage site, formerly owned and tended by the Nielsens. The genius behind the new hotspot on the web is Kate McMahon, a Bowen resident. Kate describes her site as “a place where you can gather helpful information, be inspired, learn about your neighbours, or promote yourself in a comfortable community environment. After all, wouldn’t it be great in this economy to be able to rely on each other for support? As we can no longer depend on government/taxpayer security we have to go back to relying on ourselves to self-promote.”

Kate is inviting Bowen writers to check out the site and add their bios and photos. She is also calling for submissions, including poetry, articles, news items, events, forum moderators and general contributions. All ideas about the site are encouraged and welcome. You can email Kate: submissions@lieben.ca.
