CHAC Committee to Address Municipal Council

The Community Hall and Arts Centre (CHAC) Committee of the Bowen Island Arts Council will be bringing a delegation before the Bowen Island Municipal (BIM) Council on Monday, April 27 (7:55 p.m. at Municipal Hall). The intent is to continue to build the momentum for a Community Hall and Arts Centre, a much needed place and space in which our entire community can gather.

The CHAC Committee is dismayed by the lack of significant progress resulting from our efforts to work with the Municipality and other Municipal bodies. We're close to reaching burnout. This delegation is a critical step in urging Council to take concrete action towards our goals i.e.; finalize decisions that allow us to execute fundraising strategies at a federal government level. If we do not get the direct answers and commitments (beyond vague words or promises) on this evening from Council, then the CHAC Committee is prepared to re-evaluate how it can deliver  building on civic lands through more independent means.

Currently, the main obstacle in all of this is the 16 year old quest for “The Land”...and the absolute necessity for the Municipality to follow through on it's 2006 promise t to delegate municipal property in legal terms ASAP.

Please join us on Monday, April 27, to demonstrate to Council the support of the entire arts community in this endeavour. Let's make it very clear that the time has come for action.

The CHAC Committee:
Matt Maxwell, Nina Rhodes, Paul Hooson, Jacqueline Massey, Jackie Minns, Tina Nielsen, Kate Coffey

Be sure to Celebrate Arts! on Saturday, April 25. Join the folks at the Bowen Island Arts Council, members, neighbours and friends old and new. We'll be down at the Gallery @ Artisan Square throwing a party beginning at 4 p.m. The festivities are being held in part to recognize and acknowledge the vibrant creative community that we call home. It's also a chance to participate in a few fun and games. Tattoo You, Count the Dots, Make Your Mark, It's in the Bag, Pass the Can -- or simply mix and mingle. There will be a few very special performances plus a chance to join an acoustic jam. We're also offering the opportunity to take home some original art, at a price too good to refuse.

So come early, and plan to hang with some artistic types. You'll have a chance to support your favourite community arts council and local artists and have a really good time doing it. BIAC thanks the BC Arts Council and the Bowen Island Municipality for their continued support of arts and culture on Bowen Island.

The Bowen Island Film Society presents The Visitor at Collins Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. Writer/director Thomas McCarthy (The Station Agent 2003) presents this beautifully poised and flawlessly acted paean to humanist hope. A simmering drama about change and renewal, focusing on a college professor and his unlikely friendship with a pair of illegal aliens, The Visitor tilts toward the soulful rather than the political. 105 mins. PG-13.

"The story of [Walter's] revitalization and his grief is compelling but simple, free of any sentimentality and marked by powerful performances from [Richard] Jenkins and Hiam Abbass." - Philip Marchand, The Toronto Star.

So we built a house, my wife and I, our house at a backwater puddle of a lake near Ameliasburg, Ont.
-Al Purdy In Search of Owen Roblin

And that A-frame house, made out of second-hand lumber and original poetry, became the most famous writer's house in the country. Hundreds of writers and their housemates found their way to Roblin Lake to visit the Purdys and talk about poetry and history while downing beer or wild grape wine. Coleridge and his friends had their lake country, and now the Canadian poets would have theirs. A lot of poetry and prose came out of that hard-to-find place. To prevent its second-hand wood from ending up on someone's scrap heap, and with the blessing and support of Eurithe Purdy, The Purdy A-frame project is raising funds to purchase and preserve the property, create an endowment and establish a poet-in-residence program. Al Purdy A-Frame Trust, 4403 West 11th Ave, Vancouver, BC.
