Coming Soon

The Community Choir is having a Coffee House at the Gallery @ Artisan Square on Saturday, February 28.  It begins a 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at the door. Adults:  $12; Seniors and students: $10; Kids: $5. Don't miss this wonderful variety show of local talent. It's always a treat!

Also, on Friday, February, 28, the Bowen Island Film Society will be screening two movies. The first is by local director, Peg Campbell, titled Your Mother Should Know. Peg's deeply personal narrative explores the hopes and fears in mother-daughter relationships. Using archival family footage and current interviews, Campbell weaves an evocative tapestry of three generations of women.
Peg Campbell will be in attendance for a Q & A after the screening.

The second film of the evening is Mothers & Daughters, a comedic drama that blends both narrative and documentary film types to delve into the struggles and complexities of parenting, touching on deep qualities of determination and enduring love. Using three very different mother-daughter pairs, the film explores their individual stories to offer a diverse glimpse into the needs, the denials, and the inescapable love that women feel towards each other. It runs 85 minutes and is rated 14 A. A special treat is that the three lead actors -- Babz Chula, Gabrielle Rose and Tantoo Cardinal will be in attendance at the screening.

Write on Bowen! Festival Now Accepting Proposals

Do you have writing or publishing expertise you would like to share? A book you're launching? A great new piece of writing you would like to share? A performance you know people will love? Then complete an application to participate in the second annual Festival of Readers and Writers on Bowen Island!

This year, the Festival will be held from Friday, July 10 to Sunday July 12, with expanded opportunities for presenters. You can apply to give a reading or a performance on Friday night at the opening night celebration, facilitate a workshop on Saturday or Sunday, participate in a panel discussion, host a storytelling session, or perform at the Saturday night gala.

The only criterion is that applications should relate in some way to writing and/or reading. Beyond that, the sky's the limit - writing poetry, novels, or short stories, writing for children/teens, freelance writing, business writing, making a living from writing, how to run a successful readers' group, screenwriting, song writing, writing for the Internet, blogging, inspirational writing, self-help books, how to blast writer's block, self-publishing, traditional publishing, marketing and promoting writing, the role of the writer and reader, storytelling-you name it!

Presenters included in the Festival will be paid an honorarium according to the type of event.

The deadline for applications is March 20. You can download an application form in Word format here and then email your completed application to admin@biac.ca. You can also choose to download and print a PDF version of the application form and mail or drop it in at The Gallery @ Artisan Square, Box 211, Bowen Island, BC V0N 1G0.
