Arts & Culture Weekly Update

Final Weekend to view Miniatures Exhibit
If you've already seen it, come back for a quick final peak, or if you haven't already been into the Gallery for the current show, head that way soon. The Annual Miniatures Exhibit comes down on March 1. The 50 plus works have been very popular with our gallery visitors -- a delightful array of art by our many talented local artists. Next up, and opening March 6 is a group photography show, which also promises to offer diverse styles, techniques and perspectives. The Artists' Reception is planned for Sunday, March 8, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Friday, February 27

Jazz at the Happy Isle will again be featured this week. Drop in anytime after 5 p.m. to enjoy a scrumptious spaghetti dinner special served up by the Happy Isle Gang. Teun Schut and his entertaining guitar will take the stage beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Community Choir is having a Coffee House at the Gallery @ Artisan Square on Saturday, February 28. The annual coffee houses are the sole fundraiser of the year and the generous support of the community helps to keep this industrious musical machine going and growing year after year.

The Coffee House is a magical night because it is one of the few times when we get to see our friends and neighbours, people we ordinarily rub shoulders with at The General Store or elsewhere in the community, suddenly take the stage and transform from everyday to extraordinary. Hidden talents come out of the woodwork and it’s always fun to see who has what trick up their sleeve. Don't miss this wonderful variety show of local talent. It's always a treat!

Tickets are available at the door. They are $12.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors and $5.00 for children. The Bowen Island Community Choir thanks the Bowen Island Arts Council and Bowen Island Parks and Recreation for their on-going support.

Also, on Saturday, February, 28, the Bowen Island Film Society will be screening two movies at Collins Hall. The first, which begins at 7:30 p.m. and runs for 20 minutes is by local director, Peg Campbell, titled Your Mother Should Know. Peg's deeply personal narrative explores the hopes and fears in mother-daughter relationships. Using archival family footage and current interviews, Campbell weaves an evocative tapestry of three generations of women. Peg Campbell will be in attendance for a Q & A after the screening.

The second film of the evening is Mothers & Daughters, a comedic drama that blends both narrative and documentary film types to delve into the struggles and complexities of parenting, touching on deep qualities of determination and enduring love. Using three very different mother-daughter pairs, the film explores their individual stories to offer a diverse glimpse into the needs, the denials, and the inescapable love that women feel towards each other. It runs 85 minutes and is rated 14 A. A special treat is that the three lead actors -- Babz Chula, Gabrielle Rose and Tantoo Cardinal will be in attendance at the screening.

 Art Around Town

Now featured at the Bowen Community Library, artworks by Carol Fancy. Drop by to see on exhibit oil paintings, drawings, 35 mm photography, collage and constructs -- an eclectic display of engaging and affordable works. The work will be on display at the Old General Store in Snug Cove until April 1. The library is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

 Coming Soon

Cindi Keep is coming back to Bowen for a visit, and she's bringing along some great company. Mel Watson will be performing on March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gallery @ Artisan Square.

An independent touring and recording artist for over 20 years, Mel Watson has created a unique musical experience using modern technology and outstanding musical ability in a live performance setting to create breathtaking musical pieces, layered with guitar, counter melodies and vocalized percussion. Mel uses her powerful voice as an instrument, adding thought-provoking lyrics with breathtaking horn playing. In addition to supporting artists like Michael Frante, Bruce Cockburn, and the Neville Brothers to name a few, Mel has released over 14 independent albums on various Indie labels that have won her 19 Australian Music Awards for her musical ability including 9 awards for 'Most Outstanding Instrumentalist'. Mel has also been a guest musician on countless other independent releases as a highly respected session player, while working as an international touring/recording musician, in theatre, and in television. For over 12 years Mel toured and recorded with Australian Folk sensation 'Fruit' playing "music that stretches across genres from bluesy belts to scorching torch, from plaintive ballad to anthemic rock". Consider yourselves in for a real treat as Mel makes her way up the shores of the Pacific to this rock for an intimate Equinox performance at the Gallery at Artisan Square.

Tickets are $15 advance ($18 at the door, if available) and are available at Phoenix. Seating is limited.
