Gala Tickets Sold Out!
There's been a great response to the Annual Gala and Miniatures Sale at the Gallery @ Artisan Square set to go this Saturday, February 7. We apologize to those who were unable to purchase a ticket. We truly wish we could accommodate everyone, but our space is limited.
Of course, raffle tickets are still available, along with a chance to win an original Stuart Slind painting, (pictured at left), valued at approximately $2000. Purchase yours by calling the Gallery at 604.947.2454, or by emailing gallery@biac.ca (or check with any of your friends who are BIAC members or Gallery Committee members). Thanks to Stuart for this generous donation!
The new mini-exhibit opens on Friday, with the work by approximately 50 local artists to be auctioned off on Saturday night. The petite canvasses have been signed on the reverse, so it's fun to try and discern which favourite artist painted which image. Those who can't make it to the Gala on Saturday evening are welcome to drop by on Friday or during the day Saturday to place bids on their favorite works. For more information, call the Gallery @ 947.2454, or email Ann at gallery@biac.ca. The Miniatures Show runs until 1 March.
Paul Hooson nominated for Citizen of the Year!
The Board of Directors of BIAC has endorsed the nomination of Paul Hooson for Citizen of the Year, an award to be announced the Annual Excellence Awards hosted by the Bowen Island Chamber of Commerce. This year's event, which also recognizes oustanding business and individuals providing services to Bowen Islanders, will be held Monday evening, February 9, at the Bowen Lodge by the Sea. The dinner and awards presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at the Info Centre or at Phoenix.
In supporting Paul's nomination, the Board expressed its appreciation of Paul's work as an advocate for the arts and culture on the island. "His achievements and contributions are vast ... He has worked tirelessly towards the realization of a shared community dream – a Community Hall & Arts Centre. He has volunteered on countless committees and groups to help forward this cause. He's been very effective in building bridges between various sectors of the community.
"As an artist and performer, Paul has entertained many local audiences as well, bringing them joy and delight. He also gives donates his time and talent to many charitable events off-island as well as on Bowen. He is known for his work as a therapeutic clown and is highly popular at BC Children's Hospital, where as the clown, Doc Wilikers, he strives to lessen the pain of young patients.
"Paul is an individual well loved by our own community, as shown by the massive support he received when he recently was faced with legal challenges. A long-time resident of the island, we believe the community is infinitely richer because Paul calls Bowen home. Therefore we agree that he would make an excellent candidate as Citizen of Year for 2009."
The BIAC Board thanks and congratuates Paul and all those who were nominated for the various awards.
