Arts & Culture Weekly Update

Current Exhibit at the Gallery

A collection of narrative works over the past 30 years, the Gallery @ Artisan Square presents RETROSPECTIVE, artworks of Bill Hoopes.

This weekend is the last chance to view this powerful and provocative exhibit of work by Bill Hoopes.

The senior artist has become known lately for his serene coastal landscapes of pond and lake views and mountain vistas. This exhibition gives us the other side of Bill Hoopes, one in which the human condition is explored in canvases done mainly in the latter decades of the last century.

The influences on these works, however, comes from centuries past: the Renaissance, neo-Classical and especially 19th century schools such as the Pre-Raphaelites and French Symbolists come to mind when viewing altar-like scenarios in which diverse figures act out mysterious rituals, which are Hoopes’ reaction to the human condition in all its variety. Babies float through space, figures pile up in pyramids and mysterious allegorical dramas are silently enacted over limpid waters. His technique is flawless, the paint surfaces are beautiful and the whole exhibition reflects both the humour and spiritual dramas which Hoopes portrays as mankind’s strange but enduring legacy.
The show runs until 24 May.

This Saturday, May 23 for two shows only -- the Bowen Island Community Choir and guests take the stage at Cates Hill. Our beloved Choir is set to produce a totally unique musical experience. Accompanied by the fabulous, Juno award winning drummer Buff Allen; our local bass player Brian Hoover; our very own (we'll never let her go..) Sheilagh Sparks and director, Ms. Jazz herself, Ellen MacIntosh, the choir will present A Little Jazz Mass by contemporary British composer Bob Chilcott. The Little Jazz Mass embraces a variety of jazz styles in the course of five movements. The Kyrie grooves, the Gloria swings, the Sanctus sits right back, the Benedicts hums along and the Agnes Dei draws its inspiration from the Blues.

Along with the short and snazzy Jazz Mass, the choir will present a further selection of boppy tunes and the company of Lynn William’s Ladies Madrigals and The Artisan Squires will also grace the program. There will be something for everyone in the program. From the finger popping Pink Panther to the romantic Someone To Watch Over Me, most music lovers appetites will be satiated.

Tickets are $15 for adults,$10 for students and seniors and $5 for children. Children under five are free. Tickets can be purchased at Cates Pharmacy or at the door. Two concerts will be presented at Cates Hill Chapel. The first at 2:00 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m. Please come and celebrate Spring with the Bowen Island Community Choir. We guarantee to put a song in your heart and we suspect once it is there, it will linger for a good, long time.

BIMA presents Annie Lou -- a four piece bluegrass/folk band on May 24 at the Gallery @ Artisan Square.

When Yukon songwriters Kim Barlow and Anne Louise Genest discovered a shared joy in the string band sounds and story songs of Southern old time music, they joined their considerable musical forces (Barlow on clawhammer banjo/vocals and Genest on guitar/vocals) to form Annie Lou.

Old time music is based in a variety of dance, vocal, and songwriting and traditions. Annie Lou is faithful to these, with stringband instrumentation, rich vocal harmonies, and original songwriting that is fresh and new, yet firmly rooted in the old. Solid musical chops, rich vocal harmonies, and beautifully crafted songs reflect the solitude and grit of their northern home, and draw a straight line to the sounds of other times and places.

Tickets available at the door. Check out Annie Lou at Myspace.

BI Film Society Presents Dim Sum Funeral on Saturday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Collins Hall. DIM SUM FUNERAL, USA, 2008, 94 minutes

From director Anna Chi comes an introspective story about self-discovery and understanding framed around a seven day Chinese funeral. After the domineering and manipulative matriarch of a squabbling brood dies, her wish to have a traditional Chinese funeral is carried out, drawing her four distrustful, competitive and angry children to the family home for the event. When they come together, they inadvertently reach a new understanding after years of distance. A touching and evocative cultural exhibit that will appeal to anyone who has ever wondered how they ended up with the family they have.
